FIREWISE:

Firewise Can Work
Over the past two weeks we not only heard about forest fires in California and out west, but in other locations like Florida, Georgia and New Jersey. We still have those who will try and claim it can't happen here. It would be great if they were correct, but that is not the truth. In general we are spared many of the perils that occur in the west, such as low humidity, dry seasons, vast amounts of fast growing brush, and high winds. However, we continue to maintain, that under the right set of circumstances we could have some real problems. That is why Black Forest Village was selected to become a Firewise Community, and as long as the village is surrounded by State Forest lands, the risk is not going to change.

Residents of Black Forest Village should occasional get out their Emergency Plan and study it so they know what to expect and what to do in case there was a major forest fire. Practice what you were taught in the Firewise Program, and if you have questions, ask the Fire Company for the correct answer.
If you are new to the Community, ask for a set of Emergency Procedures, and if you haven't viewed the video material, contact someone at the Fire Company to present it to you. It is important that as a member of the community that you understand the Firewise Program.
If you are planning major remodeling efforts or landscaping efforts, information is available at the Fire Station which can help you in making the right choice.
Be proud of YOUR Firewise Program and sell it to your neighbors. That is what builds a Firewise Community.
Last week a small forest fire occurred just off of Route 44. Apparently some turkey hunters may have carelessly threw out a cigarette, and the fire smoldered all day long and even got up into some trees. By evening, when it was discovered, it had burned up against a nearby cabin and scorched the supporting blocks. The main thing that saved the cabin from burning was the owners had cleaned away all the leaves and brush from around the cabin. This was a Firewise lesson in practice!
